C looks best here.

A - which has proved... seems to modify Madagascar periwinkle
B - The prepositional phrase of the Madagascar periwinkle is too far removed from the noun it modifies - derivative
C - Correct.
D - use of that makes the following clause incorrectly modify leukemia patients.
E - Altered intent. The statement seems to suggest that the Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in China.

(C) A Madagascar periwinkle derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
(D) The Madagascar periwinkle has a derivative which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, that
(E) The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
IMO: E

@niksworth

I think C is incorrect because the intent of the statement is that the Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in China. C distorts the meaning to indicate that the derivative of the Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in China.

Well..firstly, it doesn't matter whether it is named Madagascar periwinkle or UK periwinkle or Russia periwinkle. The way I understood the statement is that the tree/herb/shrub/whatever is being cultivated in China. The origin of its nomenclature is irrelevant.. Secondly, I doubt that the GMAT would want us to eliminate an option in Sentence Correction by applying the reasoning that because an item is named as per country or region X, it cannot be grown or produced in region Y..

Guess we need the OA and an expert's help here!

I got this one wrong because i committed the same error i always commit - Not reading the non underlined portion

"is cultivated in China as part " - What is cultivated? Madagascar periwinkle or Derivative of Madagascar periwinkle?

A derivative is derived from Madagascar periwinkle and not cultivated. So only option that remains is E - Our answer.

IMO E.

we don't cultivate a derivative hence C cannot be the correct answer.

Thanks!
