Hello All,
I am gonna take a break from my work (~5.5Yrs exp). Will be moving to a relatively unknown place in US (no known business schools around).
I would like to take this opportunity to prepare myself for GMAT and other MBA application processes.
Subsequently, I would like to utilize this time to do something that may add value to my MBA candidature. What would that be?
Possibilities I can think of:
Volunteer and get involved in the community
Research/volunteer at the closest business-school (although it has relatively high-ranked)

anything else??

Take the GMAT. This will give you a chance to apply to business Schools. I'm sure there will be business schools around your place too, just that top ranked(top 20) ones may not be there.
Stusying for the GMAT and preparing your application itself will take you 7-8 months. So there's really no need to bother about other things. Concentrate on your application and start your MBA for FAll 2012

I agree - you should take the GMAT. Most students don't realize how much time GMAT preparation will take and if you are taking a break then you should have plenty of time to study. Also look into online prep courses if you feel you cannot self study effectively. Self study can be done but it is difficult and some students benefit from having someone who has been there before.

In addition I would find something to do that increases your business skills - instead of simply volunteering offer to manage a project start to finish. Business schools are looking for people who can handle leadership positions so starting a project yourself and managing it will show those skills business schools are looking for.

You could also do something internet related to show your abilities, start a blog, start and run a website etc..

You are right. Instead of passively helping/volunteering, it would be better if I can manage any projects. I will look for such opportunities. At the moment I dont know where to begin. The place where I would be living is pretty remote. I'll perhaps drive to a relatively bigger town and find something.
Any ideas on how to find ??
Also, anything else I can do to boost my resume, or at least not make it look dull (with no job for sometime)...??
