Simply because they are genetically engineered does not make it any more likely for plants to become an invasive or persistent weed, according to a decade-long study published in the journal Nature.

A) Same

IMO D

A) Same - Pronoun "they" doesn't have a clear antecedent ...and it is awkardly placed
B) because it is genetically engineered does not make a plant any more likely to Pronoun "it" is awkwardly placed before plan
C) being genetically engineered does not make it any more likely that plants will Pronoun "it " has no clear referrent
D) being genetically engineered does not make a plant any more likely to Correct
E) being genetically engineered does not make a plant any more likely that it will become any more likely that it will become ...wordy

D is correct because

make it adjective to do/that clause

"it" is prepatory object

is correct pattern.
