"Nuclear weapons are potentially more devastating than any other weapon in human history. We must stop pointing the nuclear gun at our own heads. The best way to lower the threat of nuclear war is for the nuclear capable nations, including the U.S., to lead by example and dismantle their own nuclear arsenals

The author puts forward the issue of lowering the threat of nuclear weapons and that nuclear capable nations come forward and lead by example to achieve the goal. Even though i wouldn't disagree with the author completely, dismantling nuclear weapons is not the best solution to reduce the threat of nuclear weapons. There are other benefits of having nuclear weapons, which are important to every nation in the world.

Nuclear weapons are a safety to any country and are completely necessary to position the country as a super power among other nations. The presence of nuclear weapons intimidates other nations when there is any situation that could result in war. Many terrorist organizations such as the al-qaeda fear to attack a nation when they come to know that the opposing nation has the ability to attack or destroy the terrorist organization completely. In such cases possessing nuclear weapons acts a self defense to the country.

Dismantling nuclear weapons is not the best solution for reducing nuclear threat, common understanding and cooperation among nations are an effective way to lower the threat of nuclear war at the same time positioning the country as a super power and as a intimidating force to content with for terrorist organizations.

Though people would argue that the economy of a country is affected when there is any talk about war or using nuclear missiles, in case the nuclear weapons are dismantled there is a high possibility that any terrorist organizations might attack even the most powerful nations such as the US and that could destroy the entire nation.

Organizations such as the UN can play a vital role in bringing nations together and spread a common understanding of using nuclear weapons only when there is threat to a nation or its people are affected without any valid reason behind the attack

In conclusion, cooperation among nations, peaceful talks among countries, increased participation of organizations such as the UN in solving disputes and the goal that nuclear weapons provide self defense to a country makes the idea of dismantling nuclear weapons the least choice to lower the threat of nuclear war.
