The average of a set of five distinct integers is 300. If each number is less than 2000, and the median of the set is the greatest possible number, what is the sum of the two smallest numbers?
  • A. -4,494
    B. -3,997
    C. -2,246
    D. -1,028
    E. The answer cannot be determined
Can someone please explain. :)

Hi,
IMO, answer is A
Let the five distinct numbers when arranged in increasing order be a,b,c,d,e such that a<b<c<d<e, where c is the median.
Avg of numbers is 300.
So, a+b+c+d+e=300*5=1500
As the greatest possible value of e is 1999, we need to make the median as high as possible, we take c=1997,d=1998 and e=1999
So, a+b+1997+1998+1999=1500 =>a+b = -4494.
