Automobile Dealer’s Advertisement

by aj5105 » Wed Sep 17, 2008 8:57 am
Automobile Dealer’s Advertisement:
The Highway Traffic Safety Institute reports that the PZ 1000 has the fewest injuries per accident of any car in its
class. This shows that the PZ 1000 is one of the safest cars available today.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument in the advertisement?
(A) The Highway Traffic Safety Institute report listed many cars in other classes that had more injuries per
accident than did the PZ 1000.
(B) In recently years many more PZ 1000’s have been sold than have any other kind of car in its class.
(C) Cars in the class to which the PZ 1000 belongs are more likely to be involved in accidents than are other
types of cars.
(D) The difference between the number of injuries per accident for the PZ 1000 and that for other cars in its class is quite pronounced.

I would go with 'C'.

This seems like an overgeneralization. The advertisement states that the PZ 1000 has the fewest injuries per accident in its group and then proceeds to conclude that the PZ 1000 is one of the safest cars available. Just because it is the safest car in its class does not mean that it is one of the safest cars. Just because it is the safest car in its class does not mean that is one of the safest cars. It could very well be that the class of vehicles in which the PZ 1000 has the most injuries per accident when compared to other vehicle classes. While it is still true that the PZ 1000 is at the top of its own class, this does not mean its at the top of other classes as well.

Does that make sense? I was trying to explain it as best I could but that what came out.

What's the official answer?

C
Cars in PZ1000 class are more likely to involve in accident than any other
hence P1000 becomes safe
so can not be the answer

I am not able to find the answer
My guess is for B

yeps, that was correct explaination.

this is a scenario of SCOPE SHIFT. Premise talks about PZ1000 to have lowest accident related injuries in ITS class. And the conclusion talks about PZ 1000 being the one of the safest car (iconclusion didn't mentione in ITS class)
