OK, here's why I think it should be A.

B&C use the to be for regard, which is an improper idiom.
D uses being, which is generally wrong on the GMAT.
E is confusing and it sounds as if both golf players are modifying the precedent.

Again, just take all the junk out of the sentence to see that A is clearly the best answer.
