I assume that bagels normally cost x dollars each.

So, for 56 bagels, normal cost would be 56*100x cents

Let's calculate the discount now. In 56 bagels, there are 4 full dozens, so Betty will get 1.40*4 = 560 cents as a discount

Total payment made to the shop = 5,600x – 560 cents

=> 5,600x – 560 = 56*90

=> x = $1

Correct answer: A

Hope this helps!

Solution:

The total amount of money Billy spent on the bagels is 56 * 0.90 = $50.40. Since 56 bagels are 4 dozens of bagels plus 8 more and the 4 dozens of bagels will receive a discount of 4 x 1.40 = $5.60, we can create the equation:

56x - 5.6 = 50.4

56x = 56

x = 1
