Let's assume the following.

D = Percentage of people with advanced degrees and less than one year of experience.
E = Percentage of people with no advanced degrees and with one year or more of work experience = 20%.
B = Percentage of people with advanced degrees and with one year or more of work experience
N = Percentage of people with no advanced degree and less than one year of experience

Question: What's the value of D?

We know that 100 = D + E + B + N; given that E = 20

=> D = 80 - B - N

1. 35 percent of the employees do not have advanced degrees and 55 percent have less than one year of work experience.

=> E + N = 35 => 20 + N = 35 => N = 15
=> D + N = 55 => D + 15 = 55 => D = 40

Sufficient

2. 15 percent of the employees lack an advanced degree and have less than one year of work experience; 45 percent have one year or more of experience.

=> N = 15
=> E + B = 45 => 20 + B = 45 => B = 25
Pluggin-in the value of N and B in D = 80 - B - N, we get D = 80 - 25 - 15 = 40.

Sufficient

The correct answer: D

let W=% of people with no advanced degrees and with one year or more of work experience .
let B=% of people with advanced degree and with one year or more of work experience.
let N=% of people with no advanced degrees and less than one year of work experience.
$$W=20\%\ and\ \ A+W+B+N=100$$
Find A
Statement 1
35% of employees do not have advanced degree and 55% have less than one year of work experience
W+N =35
A+N=55, since W=20
20+N=35, hence N=15
A+15=55, hence A=55-15=40, thus statement 1 is INSUFFICIENT.

Statement 2
15% of the employees have advanced degree and have less than one year of work experience ;
45% have one year or more of work experience .
N=15
W+B=45
Remember that A+W+B+N=100
A=100-(W+B+N)
A=100-(45+15)
A=100-60=40
Statement 2 is SUFFICIENT
Both statement 1 and 2 alone are SUFFICIENT
