Astronomers have theorized

by madhur_ahuja » Thu Jun 18, 2009 6:09 pm
Astronomers have theorized that the Big Bang governs the behavior of interstellar dust, particles that comprise the atoms and molecules created in the progenitive explosion and persisting in even the emptiest regions of space.

* persisting
* persists
* persisted
* they persist
* are persisting

IMO E

Since the particles are still there, we are left with options A and E

Astronomers have theorized that the Big Bang governs the behavior of interstellar dust, particles that comprise the atoms and molecules created in the progenitive explosion and persisting in even the emptiest regions of space.
Here if we remove the boldfaced part, we find that E completes the sentence, not A

Hence E

I would go with A

parallelism between past participle (created) and present particple (persisiting)

How about 'B'?

parallelism can also be there between governs and persists

well vikas....even i had initially chosen B

but i guess A shud be right bcos the big bang is not persisting in the emptiest regions of space...the particles are..and hence the present participle persisting is the right parallel word for the past participle created...as both these verbs are for dust particles...

cheers!!!!!

IMO, it is B. There is no reason to think big-bang persists in empty space

My choice = B

"Astronomers have..." indicates something that is still ongoing - "persists"

OA please

IMO A

in even the emptiest regions of space can refer to the Big Bang, particles or the atoms and molecules.

If B were the correct answer in even the emptiest regions of space would refer to the Big Bang
Astronomers have theorized that the Big Bang governs ... and persists ..
I don't think this makes sense.
persists cannot refer to particles or atoms and molecules since persists is singular.

if we want in even the emptiest regions of space to refer to particles we should add that

Astronomers have theorized that the Big Bang governs the behavior of interstellar dust, particles that comprise the atoms and molecules created in the progenitive explosion and that persist in even the emptiest regions of space.

Since none of the answers contain that persist, in even the emptiest regions of space refers to the atoms and molecules.

the atoms and molecules created in the progenitive explosion and persisting in even the emptiest regions of space
this structure is parallel since created is parallel to persisting.
