rjangada wrote:what is the rule for sentences with "As well as" phrase? Is the verb form singular or plural?
'as well as' is used for parallelism. for example--if a noun preceeds this phrase, then a noun must follow: johnny is a friend as well as a confidant.

I think this is wrong, it should be singular..

rjangada as well as johny IS studying hard to beat the GMAT!

"As well as" is just an additive phrase that joins two subjects but doesn't form a compound subject on addition. As a result the number of the original subject doesn't change because of the additive phrase. Only and can join two subjects to form a compound subject.
example:
rjangada as well as johny IS studying hard to beat the GMAT.
rjangada and johny ARE studying hard to beat the GMAT.

PS: Refer Manhattan SC's Chapter on Subject verb agreement.
