127. As Hurricane Hugo approached the Atlantic coast, it increased dramatically in strength, becoming the tenth most intense hurricane to hit the United States mainland in the twentieth century and most intense since Camille in 1969.
(A) most intense since Camille in 1969
(B) most intense after Camille in 1969
(C) the most intense since Camille in 1969
(D) the most intense after 1969, which had Camille
(E) since 1969 and Camille, the most intense

Answer is eiher A or C .Just wanted to know why we need 'the' .

A superlative must:

(a) stick to the following format: the most adjective or the adjective-est (e.g., fastest)

(b) include a definition of the group being compared:

Incorrect: Jane is the most pleasant person.
Correct: Jane is the most pleasant person in town.

We need "The" here because whenever you see "and" in a sentence, then text before and after "and" should have the same structure.

the tenth most intense hurricane and the most intense.

Further, we require "since" here. Using "After" alters the meaning of the sentence.

Answer C

Well I have some confusion here regarding use of since with Camille... As since is used to refer point of time so we could have used since 1969 ..but..Do Since Camille refer to some pint of time ...
I think the correct answer could be "the most intense after Camille in 1969"...
Though OG gives ans as "C" but I m still not satisfied with the use of Since with Camille...
