array of tax

by vishalwin » Sun Oct 11, 2015 3:16 am
An array of tax incentives has led to a boom in the construction of new office buildings; so abundant has capital been for commercial real estate that investors regularly scour the country for areas in which to build.
(A) so abundant has capital been for commercial real estate that
(B) capital has been so abundant for commercial real estate, so that
(C) the abundance of capital for commercial real estate has been such,
(D) such has the abundance of capital been for commercial real estate that
(E) such has been an abundance of capital for commercial real estate,

How to choose between A and D?

Why B,C is wrong?

e Seems wordy. right?

Hi Vishalwin,
I almost fall in the trap of this sentence. Luckily, I can find a way out.

(A) so abundant has capital been ... that ---> Inversion (Capital has been so abundant ...that) -->Correct
(B) capital has been so abundant ..., so that ---> We have "so" and "so that" --->Incorrect
(C) the abundance of capital ... has been such, ---> We have "such" at the end --->Incorrect
(D) such has the abundance of capital been ... that ---> Inversion (The abundance of capital has been such ...that), but look carefully, we need a noun between "such...that" ---> Incorrect
(E) such has been an abundance of capital for commercial real estate, ---> Wrong inversion

B: capital has been so abundant so that investors regularly scour the country
Here, the usage of so that implies capital INTENDS to induce investors to scour the country.
This meaning is nonsensical.
CAPITAL cannot have an INTENT.
Eliminate B.

C: the abundance...has been such
D: such has the abundance...been
E: such has been an abundance
There options all convey the following meaning:
Abundance has been SUCH.
Here, the usage of such does not convey a complete meaning.
What exactly has abundance been?
Eliminate C, D and E.

The correct answer is A.
