can any expert tell me theory behind how to calculate the area of an irregular figure ?

Yikes - what resource is this from?
If there were answer choices (where are the answer choice anyway?), perhaps they'd be spread out enough for us to ESTIMATE. As it stands, this question can't be answered with any accuracy.

Hi abhasjha,

I agree with Brent - the idea that this is part of a GMAT prompt would strike me as questionable.

Is it part of a larger picture? A graph perhaps? When you say that we're to "assume that 1 square grid = 1cm^2", does that mean that AC, CD, DE, etc. are all 1cm long? Where/what are the answer choices?
