Correct choice is (B)

(a) dose not clear as what to hide from being stolen
(b) correct (no error)
(c) not correct idiom..
(d) to wordy plus chalice cant help itself to avoid being stolen lol
(E) same meaing as (b) but wordy so out.

It's a matter of a missing pronoun - " to keep from " doesn't indicate to keep what from ? So - it quantifies the noun correctly

'B' it is. Having the pronoun 'it' adds clarity to the sentence.

Note: I don't see an incorrect idiom - 'to avoid' if it really is incorrect, please do let me know.

hi,

you said that option E is out because it is wordy. Now if option A is out because it is missing "it" , wouldn't option E be wrong for the same reason?

pl. explain.

I will try to answer your query .

A preposition always express relationship between two words .

(A) to keep from

To express the relation between Buried and Keep .

Now what relation dose FORM express ? its missing a word that would clarify the relation ship with "being stolen"

(B) to keep it from

(C) to avoid

This option looks fine to me except it dose not conveys the authors intended meaning . I dont see any Idiom error here . Please let me know if i have missed some thing.

(D) in order that it would avoid
Grammatically this option is correct but changes the meaning . IT here clearly refers to "chalice" . Now a chalice is a non living thing how can it avoid some thing all by itself ? Dosent make sense .

(E) in order to keep from

You are right here E as in A repeats the same error .

Archaeologists in Ireland believe that a recently discovered chalice, which dates from the eighth century, was probably buried to keep from being stolen by invaders.

(A) to keep from :INCORRECT: keep from who?? archaeologist??
(B) to keep it from :CORRECT: there is only one singular noun 'chalice' which can refer to it.

(A) to keep from
(C) to avoid
(E) in order to keep from

Chalice was sth to keep/avoid from Y
= Chalice keeps/avoids itself from Y ... not make sense.

But
(B) to keep it from
= Someone keep chalice from Y
Since it = chalice, chalice cannot keep itself but by someone (not mentioned) do ... clear

"To keep from" is the idiomatic usage. Hence, C, D, and E can be eliminated.
B uses 'it' correctly to specify what could be stolen.
B is the best choice.
