Applying right out of undergrad, R2, R3?

Hi-

The HBS website states something along the lines of "we encourage college seniors to apply in our third round." Should I take that as concrete and apply in the third round? Should I consider applying in R2 if my application is completed early?

I would also like to know your general stance on the matter besides just HBS as I will be applying to other schools as well.

Dear Robert,

For most schools, you want to apply in either R1 or R2. As soon as you have your applications in tip-top shape, submit them. The majority of schools will start the evaluation process as applications come in and are completed, so the sooner you get it in, the sooner you get in the queue. As for HBS, that is a tough one. I don't think it means you have to wait until R3, and I don't think it will hurt you if you apply in R2. I do think it is possible to infer that your application might get held back in R2 though to be evaluated closer to the other college seniors applying in R3. For the best answer on HBS though, I would encourage you to contact the admissions office directly to inquire what the preference is--and if it is a preference or a directive.
