Of 30 applicants for a job, 14 had at least 4 years' experience, 18 had degrees, and 3 had less than 4 years' experience and did not have a degree. How many of the applicants had at least 4 years experience and a degree?

A. 14
B. 13
C. 9
D. 7
E. 5

total 30
at least 4 years work ex ->W
degrees -> D
D=18
3-neither D nor W
W=14
to find, n - both W and D
30 = 14+18-n+3 ->n=5
IMO E

Answer: E
Use a group grid (what some call a matrix) to organize the information. Here's the grid with all of the known information entered:

All of the numbers in the grid have to add up horizontally and vertically. Here's the complete grid:

Number of applicants with a degree and at least 4 years experience = 5.

The correct answer is E.

Totally agree with Guru! Strategy for sets with 2 variables use group grid and fill in the blanks, it works really well for these problem types.
