Dear Members,

I request you to kindly review my essay and to share your comments.

Essay Type : Analysis of an issue.

Issue : There is only one definition of success -- to be able to spend your life in your own way.

Essay :

The definition of success, in one's life, is quite a topic suitable for debates. Does the society define if a person is successful or is the ranking given by the individual himself? Also, how do you define success? Is it based on money, fame, power or anything else? In my opinion, the individual himself defines whether he is successful or not. If the individual is happy with what he has achieved in life, be it whatever maximum or minimum it is, then he ought to be considered successful and success, as per me, will not be measured by money, fame or power but by whether the individual has spent his life in the way he wanted to spend it. I will give two fine examples in support of my conclusion.

The first example which I would like to quote is that of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was a very fine and successful lawyer and even had enough money to travel in a first class train coach in South Africa but he returned to India to pursue what he wanted to achieve in life. He returned to India to take part in freedom struggle. He returned to India to pursue what his heart wanted him to pursue and is considered as a fairly successful person by the world society.

The second example which I would like to quote is that of Howard Hughes. Hughes was already a successful businessman but again he was not happy with what he had achieved in his life. His real interest was in aviation and he spent thousands of dollars to pursue his interest in aviation, which is where his interest lay. People remember Howard Hughes more as a aviator than as a businessman.

This is not to say that success can be measured only if the individual had pursued what he or she wanted to pursue and that there are other factors as well which play a role in determining if an individual was successful or not. However it is only fair that success is defined by the individual for himself and if the individual had achieved what he had set out to achieve in life then his or her story is a 'success' story.
