According to anthropologists, the use of human language covers a wide spectrum from practical communication between people engaged in the same task to establishing hierarchy within a social group.

1]practical communication between people engaged in the same task to establishing hierarchy
2]communicating practically between people engaging in the same task to the establishment of hierarchy
3]practical communication between people engaged in the same task to the establishing of hierarchy
4]communicating practically between people engaging in the same task to hierarchy established
5]practical communication between people engaged in the same task to the establishment of hierarchy

in A , comunication (as a noun) is not paralel to establising (here used as verb)

in B, communicating (used as verb) is not paralel to establislment (as a noun)

in D, comnunicating (as a verb) is not paralel to hyachy (as a noun)

in C, communication is PARALEL to establishing (used here as a noun), BUT gmat prefer noun than doing

E is left.

IMO A is the best among the choices. Simply because, I'm not convinced with other 4 choices.

How i wish we search a bit and search a bit more before opening new threads!!!!

Ron has explained why E is the answer!!! Also explained why there is no discrepancy in the usage of "the"

This Q has been discussed atleast twice before in separate threads!!!
