OA A
I assume you are asking why not C.. well i would chose C if it were "there were" instead of "they were"
in this question "it" holds the place for "anomalies in the orbit of Uranus".
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

The correct structure of the sentence is

It was X that led to the discovery of Y

only A fits in.
B) It was the orbit of Uranus showing anomalies that
no : it was not the orbit.
(C) They were anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that
who "they"?
(D) The orbit of Uranus being anomalous was what
Passive
(E) The anomalies in the orbit of Uranus was what
Awkward structure
