Ancient clay

by caspermonday » Wed Sep 09, 2009 9:50 am
A recent study of ancient clay deposits has provided new evidence supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other creatures some 65 million years ago.

(A) supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that
(B) supporting the theory that global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact
(C) that supports the theory of global forest fires that were ignited by a meteorite impact and that
(D) in support of the theory that global forest fires were ignited by a meteorite impact and that
(E) of support for the theory of a meteorite impact that ignited global forest fires and

OA B

Could anyone explain what is wrong with C

Thank you!

I think C is grammatically correct, but it's just a very awkward way of saying exactly what the other answers say. As you may know, awkward or wordy phrasing could be the deciding factor between two grammatically correct answers.

At a surface glance you can notice C has a lot of 'that' in it, and that it uses "the theory of". On the structure level it means you have too many unnecessary clauses, andyou get something like:

that supports A of B that was C and that D

Whereas the correct answer choice is a single swoop - much more concise and organized:

supporting A that B

B is correct

i think all other choices except B is changing the meaning or intended purpose of statment.

actually the theory is neither global forest fires nor metorite impact.

it is about the global forest fires ignited by metorite impact which resulted in extinction of dianos..

only B is correctly holding the meaning
and all other are making global forest fires or metorite impact as the theory

It does not matter how many times you get knocked down , but how many times you get up

A, C, D contain 'that' misplaced. Choice E does not have the correct idiom usage...better choice amongst these is B ...

why B? Don't we avoid gerunds used as verbs on GMAT ...so why supporting is correct ??

Gerund is allowed on the GMAT. In this case, the gerund is used to describe an action that occurred at the same time with the preceding part-of-a-sentence.

C to me is redundant

The "and that" in C implies that the theory contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
