Prompt: “No employee of any business, public or private, should have complete autonomy; even employees at the highest level of management require some supervision.”
Assignment: Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above. Support your position with reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
----------------------

The issue of providing complete autonomy or not to an employee of any business public or private is a controversial one. On the one hand, employees of a company need the freedom to think and work freely to help improve the revenue and profits of the company. On the other hand, too much freedom without restraints has the potential to create disasters such as the Enron Debacle. On carefully evaluating the reasons, it is clearly evident that even the highest level of management needs some supervision for the welfare of the company and the people who work in the companies.

The main idea for my belief is the fact that human beings are in general prone to the virtues of greed and lust. Complete freedom without restraints provides a clear path for human beings to do whatever he or she pleases. In turn, this increases the human being's greed to get more than he or she deserves and abuse the power in ways which will harm the rest of the company. For instance, take the case of Enron. The CEO of the company, in collusion with the CFO, due to limited oversight by the board of directors of the firm, fooled the public into believing that they were making lot more revenue than they were actually doing so. This lead to the companies stock price to be overvalued, which enabled the CEO and CFO to make their money. When a whistle blower emerged, the company collapsed and the main sufferers were the employees who had invested all their 401K money in the company stock.

Another idea for my opinion is that the productivity and harmony of a work environment will grow only when there is an overseeing authority monitoring the work environment. If all employees of a company can do whatever they please, it creates an atmosphere of mistrust and chaos leading to poor productivity which will eventually lead to the failing of the company. Furthermore, the team spirit, which is an important factor in the development of any product in a company, will become extinct since each individual will assume greater responsibility and power and will not listen to the other team members.

lastly, the best illustration for explaining my idea will be to look at the government. Each unit of the government is responsible for achieving their goals and can act autonomously in obtaining those goals. However, they are eventually help responsible for their actions by the people and the president of america. For instance, Based on the CIA's information on the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, president of US decided to attack Iraq. THe CIA had full autonomy to obtain the data it needed to corroborate the evidence but in the end, we all know that CIA didn't do a good job in collecting the evidence. However, since the president has more power than the CIA, it was able to rein in the control of the CIA and help correct the system.

In conclusion, it is clear that an overriding authority should be present for every level of management in a company to effectively manage the firm.
