“It is unrealistic to expect individual nations to make, independently, the sacrifices necessary to conserve energy. International leadership and worldwide cooperation are essential if we expect to protect the world’s energy resources for future generations.”

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

The issue of whether international leadership and worldwide cooperation is required for protecting the world's energy resources is an interesting one, especially in today's age where demand for energy is high and supply is quickly dwindling. On the one hand, worldwide international cooperation for preserving energy requires a lot of overhead from the individual countries and may not address the best interests of individual nations. On the other hand, international leadership and cooperation is essential in managing the future use of energy as the supply of energy will not last forever. In this essay, I will argue that ensuring a single holistic approach to addressing energy use is essential for the overall well being of the planet.

One reason for my belief is that the supply of energy will quickly come to an end in the near future. If nations do not cooperate and come up with a global approach to conserving energy, once energy does in fact run out, chaos will occur. Countries with oil reserves will be self sufficient while other countries will come to find that oil is no longer widely available. World leaders must work together to ensure energy rich nations in the Middle East distribute its energy appropriately among countries. Energy hungry nations such as the US and China demand more energy while smaller third world countries may require a lot less energy to operate. Our world leaders need to come up with an approach to ensure that energy is distributed among nations so that it benefits the global economy. Because many countries are dependent on countries such as US and China, if these countries do in fact run out of energy, a domino effect may occur causing problems for many dependent nations.

Another reason our global leaders need to work together in conserving energy is to ensure that energy is not needlessly wasted by consumers. For example, if automobiles are one of the greatest consumers of energy, global regulations should be enacted preventing the use of certain energy intensive vehicles such as the Hummer. If our world leaders work together and restrict certain practices or vehicles, energy conservation will be greatly enhanced. If a smaller country such as Canada decides to restrict these Hummer vehicles on its roads, so too should high consuming nations like the United States.

In conclusion, with the arguments stated above, our world leaders need to work together and ensure that we come up with a holistic approach to conserving energy so that future generations will be successful in dealing with the looming energy crisis. Although this approach may not be ideal for everyone, it is the best method for ensuring that the world is working together to conserve energy.
