An automobile dealership sells only sedans and coupes. It sells each in only two colors: red and blue. Last year, the dealership sold 9,000 vehicles, half of which were red. How many coupes did the dealership sell last year?

1) The dealership sold three times as many blue coupes as red sedans last year
2) The dealership sold half as many blue sedans as blue coupes last year

- The dealership sells only sedans and coupes
- The dealership sell only in two colors; red & blue
- The dealership sold 9000 vehicles last year, half of each were red
So, last year, 4500 red vehicles and 4500 blue vehicles were sold

Target question => How many coupes (both red & blue) did the dealership sell last year?

Statement 1 => The dealership sold three times as many coupes as red sedans last year
If red sedans sold = x then blue coupes sold = 3x but red coupes and blue sedans sold are unknown so statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2 => The dealership sold half as many blue sedans as blue coupes last year
If blue sedans sold = y, then blue coupes = 2y
Since all blues = 4500 then y + 2y = 4500; y = 1500 and 2y = 3000
We don't know the value of red coupes and sedans sold so statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining both statements together =>
In statement 1 => Blue coupes = 3x
In statement 2 => It is 3000
So blue coupes = 3000 and red sedans = 1000 hence red coupes = 4500 - 1000 = 3500
Total coupes = 3500 + 3000 = 6500
Both statements together ARE SUFFICIENT
