4. Although the turtle has been toothless for more than 150 million years, in some contemporary turtle species the moderately sharp and jagged edges of their horny jaws function for teeth.
A. their horny jaws function for teeth
B. its horny jaws function for teeth
C. its horny jaws function as do teeth
D the horny jaws function as teeth do
E the horny jaws function as teeth

The OA is E.Can someone help me to reason what is wrong in A ?

Option A has the pronoun their. The subject is singular "The Turtle".

B,C,D has problems in the end. for teeth, as do teeth and as teeth do respectively.


Option E is therefore the correct answer.

the correct idiom to be used here is 'function as' and not 'function for'
Function for - refers to functioning on behalf of someone
Function as - refers to functioning like something

In response to your query about 'their' :-

The subject of the sentence is the turtle and the turtle species are introduced just as an example. Hence, the pronoun should be singular i.e. 'its' or 'the' and not 'their' which is plural.
