The answer should be B. B inserts the subject " it" which the verb refers to in the second part.[/spoiler]

Yes - answer B is the only answer that does not imply the astronomers are orbiting or located near the orbit, etc. The use of 'it' can only refer to the comet, which is the object whose location you are referring to.

but, is it possible to use pronoun even before the corresponding noun is used
