(D) Despite his being gifted, if not more gifted than his colleagues, he is extremely modest and will not publish his poetry.
(E) Being a gifted as, or more gifted than, many of his colleagues, he is extremely modest and his poetry is unpublished

C is far better than A..
we are starting a sentence with Although to make a contrast..both parts should be matched i.e. Although he is X, he will not do y and z.
"his poetry is unpublished'' unnecessarily uses possessive pronoun which is not required

The fact that he is modest implies that he wouldn't try and publish his own poetry, so C is better.

Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

I believe the reason for C to be better than A is that in A active voice is being made parellel to the passive voice, which is not correct
