Although some parents believe that the local all-girls school should begin to admit boys, others claim that girls would participate actively in class only if they had all-girls.

B. that girls will only participate actively in a class if it is all-girls
C. that girls will only participate actively in an all-girls class
D. that girls would participate actively only in a class that were all-girls
E. that girls in all-girls classes will participate actively in that situation only

IMO D

Would refers to future tense of a condition of an all girls class.
Its better to burn out than to fade away

I was thinking the same thing, but I don't believe that the use of "were" is grammatical in D.

D. that girls would participate actively only in a class that were all-girls

I believe the correct clause should read:

"...that girls would participate actively only in a class that is all-girls."

Thus, I picked C by default.

Should be C IMO. Will is preferred here. And C is the only option with will that makes sense.

can some one explain the switch in the position of only in the correct answer


participate actively in class only if they had all-girls classes (limits the situation for all girls classes)

that girls will only participate actively in an all-girls class. (limits participation)

i need to understand how can the above two options convey the same meaning.

would is a subjunctive ..it describes situations contrary to reality... or thing that wont really happen.

where as....girls WILL participate is a for real ....

hmm:

WILL: the event has not yet occured.. hence you are talking as if the event will be TRUE.. (Future tense)

If i WIN the lottery, i will quit my job..

WOULD: the event has already occurred ...... and the event is FALSE (not winning)

If i HAD won the lottery, i WOULD have quit.


just search the forums..you will find some good explanations..

check meaning, style

d and e are wordy. simple choice is prefered.
