Algebraic Translations

by T_A_M » Sun Apr 19, 2009 6:40 am
Under timed conditions, I often stumle to set up an equation correctly for word / algebraic translations qustions. Anyone have any good tips / strategies.

I made the same mistake when attempting PS220 in OG 11. Any views greatly appreciated.

OG 11 PS 220

John and Mary wer each paid x dollars in advance to do a certain job together. John worked on the job for 10 hours and Mary worked on the job for 2 hours less than John. If Mary gave John y dollars of her payment so that they would have received the same hourly wage, what was the dollar amount, in terms of y, that John paid in advance.

For just algebraic translations, surprisingly Arco's word translations book was the most helpful. MGMAT method wasn't as easy or clear as Arco's imo.

I always! crash on these questions. How should these question be approached? Especially the kind of "what is x in terms of y" and the answer choices are all kinds of equations?
