While airline travel can be detrimental to your health, many exercise experts point out that there is a surprising number of airports in the United States -even those in the major cities such as New York and Chicago - that are adjacent to public parks and pedestrian paths and that are easily reachable during long layovers.

C - are a surprising number of airports in the United States - even those in the major cities such as New York and Chicago - that are adjacent to public parks and pedestrian paths and that are easily reachable during long layovers.

D - are a surprising number of airports in the United States - even those in the major cities like New York and Chicago - that are adjacent to public parks and pedestrian paths, easily reachable during long layovers.

E - are a surprising number of airports in the United States - even those in the major cities such as New York and Chicago - that are adjacent to public parks and pedestrian paths, and easily reachable during long layovers.

I picked C. parallelism of 'that' is valid

I eliminated D on the basis of using 'like' which if I remember correctly cannot be used to depict examples.

I eliminated E becuase it violates parallelism error.

OA after some discussion.

The answer is one of the 3. The other 2 were easy to eliminate and hence it saves time for people to reply.

its definitely C why? for two reasons
1) the sentence is using "a number of" thus the use of "are" is must
2)we need "that" for parallelism "that are adjacent" and "that are reachable" For the sake of parallelism we reject D and E

they must have given the explanation as well! what they say? tell me the question number if it is from veritas book.
if it is E then the focus must be on the usage of "like" vs "such as"
the construction in E "that are adjacent to public parks and pedestrian paths, and easily reachable during long layovers" seems to be right. one can say "ABC has four apples that are red in color and tasty"

Meaning: It is generally assumed that air travel has negative affects on your health, However many EE point out THAT there are several airports in the US and THESE AIRPORTS are adjacent to public parks that are easily reachable during layovers(A brief stay in the course of a journey).

So, it is actually the parks which are reachable.

In option C, it changes the meaning and says that the airports are reachable during the layover..
During layover, you would go to some place other than Airport.
