airline accident investigation

Expert replies
by S0laris » Thu Mar 12, 2009 12:32 pm
Instead of blaming an airline accident on pilot error, investigators should find out why the error was made by analyzing airplane design, airline management, and pilot-training programs. For only then can changes be made to ensure that the same type of error does not recur and cause another accident.
Which of the following is a presupposition of the argument above?
(A) Pilot error is not a contributing factor in most airline accidents.
(B) Airline companies themselves should be the agents who investigate airline accidents.
(C) Stricter government regulation of airline companies will make air travel significantly safer.
(D) Investigators of airline accidents should contribute to the prevention of future accidents.
(E) Most pilots who make errors in flying will repeat their errors unless they are retrained.

D and E qualify as close contenders for the answer choice. But I'm going to go with E.
What's the OA?

yesterday I was furious because of OA, my answer was A(assumption IMO).
I think it's important to know what question wants, seems like "find presupposition" - means find inference(maybe I'm wrong)
anyway,

OA is D

if somebody knows this question types please explain.

Quite surprised with the OA. What is the source of the question Soalris?

presupposition means "assumption" or an unstated premise

IMO D

Conclusion:For only then can changes be made to ensure that the same type of error does not recur and cause another accident.

Negate the assumptions

(A) Pilot error is a contributing factor in most airline accidents. - Then only Pilot training should be improved, no need of changes- No effect on conclusion.
(B) Airline companies themselves should be the agents who investigate airline accidents. Irrelevant
(C) Stricter government regulation of airline companies will make air travel significantly safer. Irrelevant
(D) Investigators of airline accidents should not contribute to the prevention of future accidents. In that case the conclusion falls apart as there is no need to conduct any investigations for the cause of the accident. Correct

(E) Most pilots who make errors in flying will not repeat their errors unless they are retrained. Goes against the training improvement alone but doesn't say anything about the structural changes in aeroplane or airline management.

Real good one. For a moment I picked 'A'. Yes 'D' it is. Nice explanation "bmlaud"

What if pilot get drunked ? or fell asleep ? Seems like in this case these possibilities are already checked.

Conclusion:
For only then can changes be made to ensure that the same type of error does not recur and cause another accident.

- but error might be the pilot himself as well as changes. ?
