After the first week of training for an upcoming race, Dinesh begins the second week of his training program by increasing his weekly running mileage by 50%. After three weeks, he catches a cold and has to reduce his current weekly mileage by 40% for the final week of training. By what percent did Dinesh's weekly mileage change from the first week to the final week?

A. 15% decrease
B. 10% decrease
C. No change
D. 10% increase
E. 20% increase

The OA is B.

Let first-week mileage = 100 mph
The second week = 150 mph
The final week = 150*(1-40/100) = 150*60/100 = 90 mph

Thus, initial = 100 mph and final is 90 mph
Total decrease 10 mph or 10% decrease. Option B.

Has anyone another approach to solve this PS question? Regards!

If the first week was n, after the final week his mileage was 1.5(0.6)n = 0.9n.

Thus, the change was a decrease of 10%.
