advice when filling out the applications

by sandi » Tue Dec 14, 2010 4:23 am
I noticed when filling out the online applications that the schools ask questions like: describe your tasks in your present or former company. These are already addressed in the resume in bulletpoints, so my question is, is it ok to just lift off what I have written in my resume and just paste it in the online forms, or should I reformulate, since the adcoms will essentially read the same things twice, both in the online form and resume. Thanks.

Sandi,

I always suggest that our clients paraphrase these accomplishments when writing them in the online forms rather than just lifting them straight from the resume. This shows both that you made a concerted efforts to deliver a professional application to them and that you have the communications skills and vocabulary to effectively paraphrase your accomplishments.

In addition, however, I would also suggest trying to think of any other accomplishments in each position that did not make it onto your resume due to space constraints. This is a great place to include these as well.

Finally, be sure to the extent possible to include quantifiable accomplishments (like % or actual increases in revenue, customers, etc.).

Hope this helps,
Shawn
