Hi Stacy, I wanted to get your advice about my situation.

GMAT: 730 Quant 48 Verbal 42 (3rd Attempt)
Work Experience: 5 Years, mostly in finance. I currently work on a
trading desk, but as an assistant. So no supervisory or
leadership role.
GPA: B.S Degree in marketing 3.36
Volunteer: I am a mentor to a H.S. student and volunteer at a Martial
Arts club.

I first applied to NYU's part time with a 660 GMAT score and got dinged. Now I want to apply to the Columbia Sept 2010 program and NYU's Nov 2009 Full time program. The Columbia application is more than a year away, while I can apply to NYU this summer. Do you think I should wait for Columbia? If so, would it be a good idea for me to take a post baccherolate class there to show them I'm really interested? And what do you think are my chances to both schools? Thanks in advance!

Dear GMATaGoGo,

I think you have a shot at both programs, but whether or not you are offered admission will depend on the overall strength of your application. Your essays, recommendations and interviews will be key. There is no guarantee you will get into either, so I think you have to assess which program is the best fit for you. If the NYU program is your first choice, then apply and see what happens. In the event you are denied again, then you can move on to applying to Columbia or other New York schools. You do have plenty of options in NY, so try not to be too narrow in your school choices. As for taking a class, I don't think it will give you any sort of advantage, but if you want to brush up on your math skills or something, then take the class for your development. If NYU is not your first choice, then perhaps wait and apply to 3-4 schools at the same time.
