I have a very low gpa and am planning on addressing it in my optional essay. My question is weather you think my explanation will be seen as appropriate, or if you think it will be taken as more of an excuse.

I was diagnosed with adhd as a young kid and have been dealing with relatively severe add for most of my life. Throughout high school and college i was many different medications and treatments trying to find the one best suited for me. I chronicled this struggle on my admissions essay to college and i believe it helped me gain admission. However much it may sound like a played out excuse, my add severely affected me throughout college and negatively influenced my grades. Since, however, i have become much better at dealing with and managing my disability and without any help (extra time) was able to study and score in the 96 percentile on the gmat. I was thinking that if i broached this as a topic for my optional essay it may hurt me and be seen as an excuse (although it did help me gain admission for my undergraduate degree). Maybe its a better option just to say i have matured and make no excuses?
