Reporting that one of its many problems had been the recent extended sales slump in women's apparel, the seven-store retailer said it would start a three-month liquidation sale in all of its stores.

A its many problems had been the recent
B its many problems has been the recently
C its many problems is the recently
D their many problems is the recent
E their many problems has been the recent

Please help to give some trick for these problems...

however, to tackle this problem, first look at the 'split' in the answer choices. the first 3 choices use 'its', which is singular. the next 2 choices use 'their'. now your first job is to find out if the word being referred to is singular or plural. from reading the passage, the word being referred to is 'retailer', which is singular. therefore, D and E are incorrect.

next, you look at the verb: had been, has, or is. the problem is ongoing, so it can't be A. i believe that B is the answer because it refers to an ongoing problem.

your approach to all SC problems should be the same. always find the split first, and this will always improve your chances significantly.
