First thing to note is that the right idiom is Just as ...so

This leaves us with D and E


E) so reading Abraham Lincoln's famous Second Inaugural Address helps students grasp a time of immense domestic challenge and strife--the post-Civil War era --> the way time is described seems awkward ....the construction in D is better


So IMO D

Yeah I'm gonna go with D too.

"helps students grasp a time of immense domestic challenge", in E is wordy.
Is caught between a rock and a hard place!

Yes. Only D maintain the parallelism and proper Idiom.

While D does sound better - doesn't it change the meaning of the sentence?

The original sentence states:
"Second Inaugural Address helps students grasp the immense strife and challenge America faced in the post-Civil War era"

(D) states
"so reading Abraham Lincoln's famous Second Inaugural Address helps students grasp the post-Civil War era"
While
(E) states (at least logically):
"students grasp a time of immense domestic challenge and strife--the post-Civil War era "

Students grasping the (concept) of immense strife and challenge America faced in post-Civil War era
vs
Students grasping the post-Civil War Era!!! (D)
vs
Students grasping the time of immense strife and challenge (E)
Why does (D) come out as trumps when its altering the meaning - While (E) seems more true to the original statement?
