A worker carries jugs of liquid soap from a production line to a packing area, carrying 4 jugs per trip. If the jugs are packed into cartons that hold 7 jugs each, how many jugs are needed to fill the last partially filled carton after the worker has made 17 trips?

A. 1
B. 2
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6

I'm confused how to set up the formulas here. Can any experts help?

Capacity : 4 Jugs / trip
Total trips : 17
Total Jugs carried : 17 x 4 = 68

Number of jugs in a carton : 7
Total jugs : 68
Number of cartons filled : 68 / 7 = 9.something (The other decimal places are not required, since number of cartons is a whole number)
Next whole number is 10
Total jugs needed for 10 cartons : 10 x 7 = 70

Total jugs needed for full cartons - jugs available = balance jugs needed to fill

70 - 68 = 2

Hence B

Packed Jugs = Carry Capacity * Trips
Packed Jugs = 4 * 17 = 68

Jugs in the last box = remainder of 68/7 = 5

Jugs needed to fill last box = box capacity - jugs in the last box = 7 - 5 = 2

Hi ardz24,

We're told that a worker carries 4 jugs of liquid soap per trip and that the jugs are packed into cartons that hold 7 jugs each. We're asked for the number of jugs needed to fill the last PARTIALLY-filled carton after the worker has made 17 trips.

With those first 17 trips, the worker would have transported (4)(17) = 68 jugs of soap.

Since each carton holds 7 jugs, those 68 jugs would lead to 9 FULL cartons (totaling 63 jugs) and a 10th carton that has 5 jugs in it. Thus, 2 more jugs would be needed to fill that final carton.

Final Answer: B

After 17 trips, the worker has carried 17 x 4 = 68 jugs.

From those 68 jugs, 68/7 = 9 cartons have been filled, with 5 extra jugs remaining. So, the worker needs one more trip to carry 2 more jugs to fill the partially filled carton with those 2 jugs.

Answer: B
