B. the closeness of their resemblance to dogs has become
C. the close resemblance between them and dogs has become
D. the close resemblance between wolves and dogs becomes
E. the close resemblance of wolves with dogs becomes

Idiom is resemblence between X and Y

A : We dont know word " their" is used for researchers or wolves

B: Same as A

C: "Them" is problematic

D: correct

E idiom problem

2 reasons why A is incorrect:

1. The antecedent of their is ambiguous (wolves or researchers?)

2. Because of the word continue and as in the non underlined part.

A) As researchers continue to probe ..., their close resemblance ...has become ever more striking.
D) As researchers continue to probe ..., the close resemblance ...becomes ever more striking.

D is correct

Why A is wrong?

Error 1. Pronoun 'their' referes to 'researchers'. Remember pronoun after comma always refers to subject of the preceeding clause. Since 'their' referes to 'researchers' then meaning changes.
