A table at a certain store normally costs $50 per unit. During a sale, the store offers one free table with the purchase of every 4 tables. Janice wants to purchase 7 tables and Katelyn wants to purchase 8 tables. During the sale, how much money will Janice save if she purchased the tables with Katelyn instead of purchasing them alone?
A) 20 B) 30 C) 50 D) 60 E) 70

HI chaitanya.bhansali,

This question isn't perfectly worded, but I think that the "intent" of the question is that Janice and Katelyn, IF they purchased the tables together, would average out the price of the tables and apply the discount equitably to each table purchased. Assuming that this is the case, here's how to solve this problem.

1 table = $50
5 tables = 4 tables + 1 free table = $200

Buying alone....
Janice = 7 tables = 1 group of 5 tables + 2 individual tables = $200 + 2($50) = $300

Buying with Katelyn....
7 tables + 8 tables = 15 tables
15 tables = 3 groups of 5 tables = 3($200) = $600
$600/15 tables = $40 per table

7 tables($40 average) + $280

So, $300 buying alone and $280 buying with Katelyn = $20 saved

Final Answer: A
