I would say
q= p^(3/4)
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

p = a^4

q = a^3

express q in terms of p.

Well, as you know, (x^n)^m=x^nm

So if q=a^3, then what would you raise a^4 to to get a^3.

(a^4)^x)=a^3

a^4x=a^3

x=3/4

So, the answer is p^(3/4).

To express q in terms of p make RHS of p and q equal

p^3 = a^12
q^4 = a^12

q^4 = p^3

q = p^(3/4)
