A room contains 160 people, 15% of whom are women. A group of people, 30% of whom are women, leaves the room. Of the people remaining in the room, 10% are women. How many people left the room?

Hi,

If we choose answer C: 40 people left the room. 30% were women, so 12 women left.
We know that originally there were 24 women in the room, and after 40 leave, 120 remain, 12 of them are women, which is 10%.

Total female

160*15% = 24

let x people leave the room

x*30% = female

out of people left in the room

(160-x)10% = female


We just have to find the value of x

(160-x)10% + x*30% = 24

160 - x + 3x = 240

160 + 2x = 240

2x = 80

x = 40

Hence C.

15% of 160 are women = 24

Let x represent people who left the room(30% of these are women + 10% of 160-x are women and these both must add up to the original number of women we found above i.e. 24)

.30x + .10(160-x) = 24

x=40
