A rancher is constructing a fence by stringing wire between posts 20 feet apart. If the fence is 400 feet long, how many posts must the rancher use?

We're told that a rancher is constructing a fence by stringing wire between posts 20 feet apart and that the fence is 400 feet long. We're asked for the number of posts that the rancher needs for the fence.

This prompt is an example of a 'fence-post' problem (literally and figuratively). In these types of calculations, you have to remember that the 'first post' has to be counted - meaning that the first 20 feet of fencing requires 2 posts (not 1). With each additional 20 feet, you need only 1 additional post though.

Thus, the total number of posts is 1 + 400/20 = 1 + 20 = 21

Final Answer: D

for 20=(20x1) feet number of posts required is 2
.......40=(20x2)...................................................................3
.......60=(20x3)....................................................................4
Hence for 400=(20x20)feet number of posts required is 21
hence option D
