TWO BRAND OF DETERGENT ARE TO BE COMBINED. DETERGENT X CONTAINS 20 PERCENT BLEACH AND 80 PERCENT SOAP, WHILE DETERGENT Y CONTAINS 45 PERCENT BLEACH AND 55 PERCENT SOAP. IF COMBINED MIX IS TO BE 35 PERCENT BEACH, WHAT PERCENT OF THE FINAL MIX SHOULD BE DETERGENT X ?

A) 10 %
B) 32.5 %
C) 35 %
D) 40 %
E ) 60 %
why the answer is D? i found E. here is my solution
20x+45Y=35X+35Y
15X=10Y or 3X=2y?
yes you got it right...
3X = 2Y

what is the question - what percent of x+y is x
P/100(x+y) = x
substitute y = 3x/2
p/100(x+3x/2) = x

p/100 = 2x/2x+3x = 2/5
p= 2/5 *100 = 40%

Hence D.

This is an example where the solution takes us to a value but the question is looking for a slightly different value.
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)
