hi guys, how do you think of this argument? explain your answer choices too, please
An internal survey revealed that some employees at Company Y had called in sick in order to take care of a sick child. The company's CEO instituted free on-site day care in hopes of reducing the number of employees engaging in this practice. However, the number of employees who called in sick to care for a sick child was actually higher in the sixth month of the on-site day-care program than it had been the month before the program was instituted.

Each of the following, if true, might account for the free day-care plan's apparent lack of success EXCEPT:

A)Many parents at Company Y employ nannies, who care for both sick and healthy children.
B)Many parents declined to use the day care for fear that their sick children would catch a second illness from another sick child.
C)The on-site free day-care center is noisy, hot, and uncomfortable.
D)The sixth month of the on-site day-care program happened to fall at the height of flu season.
E)During the six-month period in question, the number of employees at Company Y increased by 25%.

since the employee strength increased , the number of children falling sick would be more and hence the number of employees staying in home would be more

IMO E.

A- Might account for failure because if employees have nannies already, employees are not staying home to take care of the kids. So they're calling in sick for something else. Hence plan fails bec it doesn't address root cause.
B- Might account if you assume parents won't use daycare for the fear outlined here.
C-Might account if you assume parents won't use daycare in presence of the conditions mentioned here.
D- Might account if you assume parents won't use daycare during flu season.
E- Increase in employee population does not tell anything, it accounts for neither success/failure of the plan hence best answer.

I will also go with A.

E supports the argument in that it mentions a possible cause for increase in number of people calling in sick.

IMO A..

Coz this option says they have nannies but still they reported more sick day. hence the reason is not clear through this statement, hence it does not contribute to explaining the lack of success..

yeah, thank you all for the answer and the answer is A and i also chose A but i didnt understand why we can eliminate C.

well, C is still relevant. It gives you reasons for not using the day care like it was uncomfortable. That is a general category and can be generalized to many things such as the people working at the day care were not nice or what ever..... the poitn is, it is still relevant.

(a) on the other hand is completely off.... In the stimulus, it says "some employees at Company Y had called in sick in order to take care of a sick child." So the employees are calling in sick to take care of their child -- they DO NOT have nannies.

Shouldnt it be C for the fact that effect comes from the 6 month and not from the first day!

In A, since nanny take care of both healthy and sick, parents may fear that healthy ones might catch disease from the sick, so would not avail of the services.

Please help.
