A group of hikers is planning a trip that will take them up a mountain using one route and back down using another route. They plan to travel down the mountain at a rate of one and a half times the rate they will use on the way up, but the time each route will take is the same. If they will go up the mountain at a rate of 4 miles per day and it will take them two days, how many miles long is the route down the mountain?

A. 4
B. 6
C. 8
D. 12
E. 16

The OA is D.

Can any expert explain this PS question? Please. Thanks.

We are given that the group will go up at a rate of 4 miles per day, thus the rate the group will come down at a rate of 4*1.5 = 6 miles per day.

Since the group took two days to go up, they would take two days to come down.

Distance of the route while coming down = time*rate = 2 days * 6 miles/day = 12 miles.

The correct answer: D

Since the rate going downhill is 4 x 1.5 = 6 miles per day and it will also take 2 days, the downhill route is 6 x 2 = 12 miles.

Answer: D
