1st day - $0.10

2nd day - $0.20 or $0.40 (double or add $0.30)
$0.20 is the lesser amount

3rd day - $0.40 or $0.50 (double or add $0.30)
$0.40 is the lesser amount

4th day - $0.80 or $0.70 (double or add $0.30)
$0.70 is the lesser amount

The correct answer is B

The total fine is increased by $0.30 or doubled, whichever results in a lesser amount - Keep the bolded phrases in mind... it is quite confusing though...

Day 1 - $0.10
Day 2- $0.10 *2 or $0.10+$0.30 (Whichever results in a lesser amount), hence its $.20
Day 3 - $0.20*2 or $0.20+$0.30, $0.40 as its lesser
Day 4 - $0.40*2 or $0.40+$0.30, $0.70 as this is lesser

So, the correct answer is __B__.

On day 1, the fine is $0.10.

On day 2, we have two options:

1) 0.10 + 0.30 = $0.40

2) 0.10 x 2 = $0.20

Since option 2 is the lesser of the 2 fines, the total fine, as of day 2, is $0.20.

On day 3 we have two options:

1) 0.20 + 0.30 = $0.50

2) 0.20 x 2 = $0.40

Since option 2 is the lesser of the 2 fines, the total fine, as of day 3, is $0.40.

On day 4 we have two options:

1) 0.40 + 0.30 = $0.70

2) 0.40 x 2 = $0.80

Since option 1 is the lesser of the 2 fines, the total fine, as of day 4, is $0.70.
