A certain characteristic in a large population has a distribution that is symmetric about the mean m. 68 percent of the distribution lies within one standard deviation d of the mean. If the shelf's average life is 9.6 years and the standard deviation is 2.1 years, what percent of the distribution has more than 11.7 years as a shelf's average life?

A. 10%
B. 12%
C. 14%
D. 16%
E. 18%

Like the above picture, what is bigger than 11.7 is 0.16=16%.
Thus, D is the answer.
