Hi All,

We're told that a certain brand of gasoline costs $1.25 per gallon. We're asked if a car averages 30 miles per gallon, what is the cost of the gasoline needed for the car to travel 120 miles. This is a multi-step 'Rate' question - and the math involved can be done in a number of different ways. We can actually start with the end result, work 'backwards' to find the number of gallons and then find the total cost of the gasoline.

120 miles is 4 "sets" of 30 miles. Since the car averages 30 miles per gallon, we would need 120/30 = 4 gallons to travel 120 miles. Since gasoline costs $1.25/gallon, the cost of the 4 gallons would be (4)($1.25) = $5.00

Final Answer: B

The car needs 120/30 = 4 gallons to travel 120 miles, so the cost is 4 x 1.25 = 5 dollars.
