A 6 hours
B. 8 hours
C. 10 hours
D. 12 hours
E. 15 hours
Let the distance between X and Y = 12 miles.
Since the distance traveled by the faster car in 4 hours = (2/3)(12) = 8 miles, the distance traveled by the slower car in 4 hours = (total distance) - (distance traveled by the faster car) = 12-8 = 4 miles.
Since the slower car travels 4 miles in 4 hours, the rate for the slower car = d/t = 4/4 = 1 mile per hour.
Since the rate for the slower car = 1 mile per hour, the time for the slower car to travel the entire 12 miles = d/r = 12/1 = 12 hours.

The correct answer is D.

Hello Vjesus12.

Let's see:

If it took to car B 4 hours to travel 1/3 of the distance, then it will take 8 hours to travel (2/3) of the distance. So, it takes 12 hours (4 hours 1/3, 8 hours 2/3) to travel form X to Y.

I hope this explanation may help you.

I'm available if you'd like a follow up.

Regards.
